Robert first started at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) as an undergraduate research assistant in 1992. His formal career at ORNL began in 1999 as a post-doctoral research fellow. He is currently the director of the National Transportation Research Center at ORNL and a professor with the Bredesen Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Graduate Education at the University of Tennessee. Robert also serves on several journal editorial boards and university advisory boards and has held leadership positions with the Society of Automotive Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Robert is from Bonne Terre, MO. He and his wife Nicole have two young children and live in Knoxville, TN. Nicole has a degree in business administration and is a stay-at-home Mom. Robert is a former 100-mile endurance runner.
