Ray began his professional career in mechanical engineering with Pratt & Whitney before returning to UMR to complete his doctoral degree. In 1972, Ray joined Ford Motor Company, where he held various engineering and management positions. He shared his expertise with the MAE department in his service on the Industrial Advisory Committee. Ray and Ruth lived in Kewadin, MI.
