Bassem started his academic career at UMR in 1969, when he was appointed as assistant professor of mechanical engineering. He served as chairman of the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics department from 1985 to 1996. Bassem took an Intra-governmental Personnel Assignment with the Department of Energy, Basic Energy Sciences, in Germantown, Maryland, in June of 1999 to serve as a Program Manager for the Engineering program. He returned to UMR after completing this assignment in August 2002. His professional career included work at Standard Oil Company for two years and at NASA-Langley for two summers on an ASEE fellowship. He spent a sabbatical year (1979–1980) at the University of Karlsruhe, in Germany as a Fulbright Hays senior research fellow. He spent time at the University College, Dublin, Ireland, in 1984 as a Jefferson Smurfit Fellow, and the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand, in 1986 as an Erskine Fellow, and at the American University of Beirut as a Visiting Scholar in the summers of 2001, 2003, and 2005.
