BSME 1971, UMR
Tom retired from Ford Motor Company in January 2007, completing a distinguished career of 40 years. Tom joined Ford Motor Company as a co-op manufacturing engineer in the Metal Stamping Division in 1967, moved to Axle Engineering in 1969, and, after graduating in January 1971, he continued his Ford career by joining Automatic Transmission Engineering. He retired in January 2007 after 40 years of service. During his Auto Trans years, he was responsible for: the design and release of mechanical components; the development of the A4LD and E4OD transmission hydraulic controls; the creation of North America's first fully electronic auto trans control system; and had been responsible for all aspects of transmission electronics for all Ford automatic transmissions since 1992. In 2005 Tom assumed responsibility for all of the powertrain electronic controls adding engine controls to the transmission controls responsibility. Tom was one of the founders personnel development committees at Ford Powertrain. He chaired the Diversity Advisory Team; created the trans electronics organization; evolved transmissions to being controlled electronically; and created the Transmission Motorsports group that successfully demonstrated the durability and reliability of Ford transmissions in off-road racing. By 1992, he had earned 15 patents and won the Henry Ford Technical Achievement Award. Tom was the lead recruiter for UMR from Ford Motor Company Powertrain and a UMR Corporate Development Council member. In March 2007, Tom took a special assignment in Germany to launch the new Powershift auto transmission. The Powershift transmission was successfully launched, and Tom returned to the US in October 2007. Tom recently accepted a part-time consultancy to help deliver a direct reading torque sensor. Tom served as President of the Shelby American Automobile Club for over 27 years and retired from that position in 2009.
