For most of his career, Sy was involved in the oil and gas pipeline industry; he developed high strength steels for line pipe, external thin film pipe coatings, CO2- and argon-shielded welding systems, automatic welding machines for pipeline construction, high speed ditching machines, and subsea pipeline connectors. Sy was named the Pipeliner of the Year by Houston Engineers Club in 1971. Sy and his late wife, Hattie, raised two boys, Thomas Paul and William Jay Orlofsky.
