Rich is a consulting engineer and registered architect with William Tao & Associates, Inc. He has designed energy systems for buildings and campuses both nationally and internationally for over 30 years. As a LEED Accredited design professional, he was responsible for the first two LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certified projects in the St. Louis region - Nidus Center for Scientific Enterprise and Washington University's Earth & Planetary Science Building. He is also the LEED Accredited professional for St. Louis’s first LEED Gold data center located at Washington University School of Medicine.
He is active in several professional societies including USGBC, ASHRAE, and IFMA, having served on their executive boards and various committees and was recently named to Webster Groves’ new Sustainability Commission.
In addition to his work at WTA, Richard was appointed an adjunct Associate Professor in 1982 at Washington University, and has taught energy and sustainable design courses in both the School of Architecture and the Mechanical Engineering Department. He is the author of Mechanical and Electrical Systems in Buildings (Prentice Hall), which is currently in its fourth edition.
