Upon graduation, Norman joined the Peace Corps and worked as a teacher in the Dominican Republic before entering the University of Wisconsin where Norman earned his Ph.D.Norman has been on the faculty of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Illinois since January of 1976. He was one of the cofounders of SoMat Corporation, a pioneer in the design and manufacture of computer based data collection and reduction systems. He served as SoMat's vice president for research and development from 1982 until 1996. After the sale of SoMat to N-Code International, he has continued to serve as an executive vice president for research and development. His teaching and research activities at the University of Illinois have reflected his interests in instrumentation and control systems and have evolved in recent years to include micro electromechanical systems.
