In 1995 UMR became the first university ever to win the Missouri Quality Award, patterned after the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. John is known for his research on the measurement of ion-atom collision cross sections with an emphasis on proton atomic hydrogen collisions. The National Science Foundation continuously supported his research for 27 years. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society. His education includes a PhD in the physics of ion-atom collisions from the University of Nebraska and postdoctoral studies at University College London. He also holds a BA degree with distinction in physics from Nebraska Wesleyan University. John retired from UMR on September 1, 2000. He and Dorcas have two daughters, four grandsons and one granddaughter. They built a home in Rolla and enjoy spending more time with their family.
