John began his career with Hallmark Cards and became the business director for the creative division. He moved into the financial operations of the business as the controller for Spangler Printers and later as vice president/treasurer for Arrowhead Grating & Metalworks. In 1977 he became president and owner of Southwest Mill Supply Co., which manufactures and ships machinery replacement parts worldwide. He served on the board of directors and as the chairman of MMMA Self-Insured Workers Compensation Fund. He also served on the boards of two local companies and was active in his church.
