Jim began his career in 1964 at McDonnell Douglas as a propulsion engineer on the Gemini manned space program. After completing his PhD in ME from Rolla in 1971, he joined Beech Aircraft in Wichita, Kansas as a missile propulsion systems engineer. In 1973 he began a 31year career at Ford Motor Company, starting as a research engineer in Ford's Powertrain Systems Research Laboratory. In 1979 he moved out of research into Powertrain Engineering, where he where he held a variety of engineering and management positions related to the design and development of powertrain systems and electronic powertrain control systems. These positions included Powertrain Control Strategy Supervisor, Electronic Systems Manager, Large and Luxury Powertrain Development Manager, Car Powertrain Development Executive Engineer, Powertrain Electronics Development Executive Engineer and his final position of Powertrain Control System Engineering Chief Engineer. Jim worked with UMR sponsoring Ford funded research in engine technology and worked to recruit UMR engineers to Ford Motor Company.
