Art began his career with Union Electric Company in St. Louis. In 1974, he resigned his position as manager of economic development and moved to a new organization in St. Louis, the Regional Commerce and Growth Association (RCGA), as executive vice president. He left RCGA in 1984 and assumed the leadership position at Printing Industries of St. Louis, from which he retired.
In retirement, Art was active in a number of organizations including St. Louis City/ County Small Business Development Corporation, University of Missouri Alliance of Alumni Associations, and the Missouri University of Science and Technology Alumni Association.
